The Greene County girls basketball team is ready to begin a new season with veteran coach Todd Gordon who is assisted by Jeff Lamoureux. This is Gordon’s first year as the Rams’ head coach. The first game is slated for Friday, Dec. 4, against Roland-Story in Jefferson in the new high school gymnasium.
This is a senior-laden team eager to improve on last season’s record of 3-19. The highlight of that team was a first ever Greene County victory in regional tournament action when the Rams defeated Southeast Valley in the first round before being eliminated by 19-4 Roland-Story.
Returning letterwinners include seniors Sadie Wilson, Eliza Carlson, Brianna Osterson, Autumn Villebro, Lily Muir and Makala Kafer; junior Brianna Habben; and sophomores Natalie Heupel, Alexa Peters, Ashlynn Hinners and Kamryn Sanders. Also expected to see playing time is sophomore Emma Hoyle.
The coach reported the effort and enthusiasm in practice has been good. The team is working to cut down turnovers and play tough defense night after night.
Roland-Story is the favorite to win the Heart of Iowa Conference, having a #9 preseason ranking. Nevada and West Marshall will also make some noise.
“’Day by Day’ is our team motto and that is how we are approaching it,” stated Gordon. “We will work to get better every day and enjoy every day we have together, especially since we have already had to pause our season for seven practices due to going to remote learning.”
